Mountain Skills

I offer Mountain Skills 1 and 2.  These are both 2 day non-residential courses, usually based in the Mournes.

The Mountain Skills (MS) training course provides the essential personal proficiency skills you will need to enjoy the mountains in the UK & Ireland safely. This course is Mountain Skills 1- during which the basic foundations of map reading and navigation are introduced and practiced.

The follow up (again 2 day course) Mountain Skills 2 builds on Mountain Skills 1 to look at the use of the compass in more detail and to challenge your new skills by using them at night. I only run Mountain Skills 2 in late autumn through to Spring as otherwise you have to be up really late before it gets dark!

Offering a solid foundation for gaining personal mountaineering proficiency, Mountain Skills training teaches the necessary skills in mountain safety, navigation techniques, knowledge of hazards, and personal equipment, so that a person finishing the course may be in a position to safely, and competently, take to the hills.

Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Mountain Leader (ML).

Aims of Mountain Skills

I want to be able to give you the skills to be able to go out and have adventures on your own and with friends and family.  The emphasis is on navigational skills but there is so much more covered including what kit you need, hazards, the environment and what to do if it goes a bit wrong or yo come across someone needing help.  I will cover the syllabus but will tailor it to whatever stage you are at so as to maximise your learning.  I will provide maps and compasses for use on the course for all participants.
